We had a very successful premier in New York for my latest film War/Peace. The film opened powerful conversations. I was honored to sit in the same row on the stage with such legendary people as Bill Ayers, Bernardine Dohrn, Cathy Wilkerson and Jamal Joseph. When you make a film or write a book about something that happened in another country you never know how the people who actually experienced the events will react to your film or book. I was surprised to notice that this is actually what we should be doing much more. As an outsider looking into the events with no personal understanding or opinion of them, you almost accidentally open the 'box of the truth'. Afterwards people came to thank me of showing them this controversial part of their history from early 70s, that has often been shown through shady and opinionated glasses. I was thanked that I had allowed these people talk to themselves about their truth and not so much about mine. The feedback that touched me the most was said by different people on each of the three nights; that young people in America should all see this film. I agree! My call goes to the Universities and Colleges nationwide. Pick up this film and screen it for your student!
Thank you The Maysles Cinema, Jessica Green, Gillian Walker, Dale Dobson, Bill Ayers, Bernardine Dohrn, Cathy Wilkerson, Jamal Joseph and Jeremy Varon.
